Mille Feuille

For no particular reason, treated myself to some cake from Patisserie Valerie. I have to say, mille feuille is one of my favourites, and this one was pretty intense.

Armed with a knife and fork, I was ready to dig in. Three layers of puff pastry intercepted with a custard filling, it was an extremely messy eat (even with cutlery). Mostly because the pastry’s quite firm and difficult to cut through, resulting in masses of custard just oozing out as you try to get your knife and fork through. A total logistical nightmare. Having said this, it was still effing delicious. The custard is mousse-like in texture, and the sweet icing is tempered by the pastry. Very difficult to eat it all in one sitting. And for £2.95 take-away, it’s pretty damned good for Soho.
